RecycleMania, an annual competition administered by the National Recycling Coalition, pits WUSTL against other U.S. colleges and universities to see which campus can prevent the most materials from being buried in a landfill. The contest began Jan. 18 and ends March 28.
Each week, standings will be posted online to help motivate the WUSTL community to continue recycling. RecycleMania award categories are as follows:
Grand Champion: given to the school that recycles the greatest percentage of its overall waste;
Waste Minimization: given to the school with the lowest amount of total waste per person, which includes both trash and recycling;
Per Capita Classic: given to the school that recycles the greatest amount of recyclables per person;
Gorilla: given to the school that recycles the greatest overall amount of recyclables.
Awards also go to the schools that recycle the most paper, corrugated cardboard, bottles and cans.
The University's Office of Sustainability monitors and submits WUSTL's recycling and waste totals to RecycleMania administrators.
